The Capitals skate into Boston on a three-game winning streak while the Bruins are coming off of a convincing win over the Rangers. Let's analyze this matchup between two East Division rivals and continue to break the books with our NHL picks!
Washington Capitals vs. Boston Bruins
Wednesday, March 3, 2021 – 7:00 PM ET at TD Garden
The Capitals have wrested control of the top spot in the East by winning three straight games, with the most recent being a 3-2 win over the Devils in New Jersey. Everything about the game was closely contested including shots, 23-21 in favor of Washington, penalty minutes at 11 apiece, and even the score, but the Caps won more than double the faceoffs and controlled the action.
Free big money. Who else but Alex Ovechkin would break the 2-2 tie to put the lid on their victory in the second period? Washington's first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2015 draft, Ilya Samsonov, returned after spending a few weeks off of the ice due to COVID-19 and had a slightly rocky, but ultimately winning performance between the pipes in stopping 19 of 21 shots.
'It was great to see him back there and it was great to get him a win in the first game he is back to,' Backstrom said of Samsonov.
'I thought they had some really good chances there in the third and he really played solid back there. I mean I think when the season has been a little bit like his so far, it's good with confidence.'
The Caps swept the Devils in their own building and will now travel to Boston on the third leg of a five-game road trip. Washington won the first of two games this season against the Bruins, 4-3 OT, on January 30th but dropped a 5-3 decision on February 1st.
Bruins Ready for Home Cookin'
The Bruins are 7-4-2 on the highway but a sparkling 5-1 at home, and after going 1-2 on their most recent road trip they will be happy to return to the Garden. Boston has lost four of their last six contests and now trails the Capitals by two points but with two games in hand.
However, their most recent outing on Sunday afternoon proved to be one of their most complete performances of the season. When it was all over, the Bruins atoned for their 6-2 Friday night loss to the Rangers with a 4-1 win over the Blueshirts on Sunday in New York.
Tuukka Rask rebounded from an uncharacteristically poor performance with a solid 20 save effort in the victory. Charlie Coyle notched his fourth and fifth goals of the season while Charlie McAvoy added a goal and an assist.
'Really happy with how the team played today,' McAvoy said. 'We stuck together, kind of felt like a must-win. We are not comfortable dropping games. .. We wanted to fix this road trip and at least finish on a high note.'

Here we have a clash of the two top teams in the division but the Caps are having a difficult time getting steady goaltending and solid defense. Washington ranks 25th in the league in goals against, currently allowing 3.19 goals per game, and will likely trot a rusty Ilya Samsonov out to tend the twine. That would be a big boon for a Bruins' offense that is averaging a whopping 4.33 goals per game at home.
Moreover, the tandem of Rask and backup, Jaroslav Halak, are one of the very best in the business, so even if Rask doesn't get the nod, Halak is not much of a step down. Thus, while Washington owns one of the most potent offenses in the league, Boston has one of the stingiest defenses. The NHL odds at many of the best online betting sites are revealing the Bruins as -152 home chalk, which seems a bit steep against a high-flying Capitals' offense, but consider the trends working in favor of Boston on Wednesday night:
- Capitals are 1-4 in their last five when their opponent allows two goals or less in their previous game.
- Capitals are 0-4 in their last four Wednesday games.
- Bruins are 5-1 in their last six home games.
- Bruins are 4-0 in their last four versus a team with a winning record.
While I am never thrilled about laying the lumber, sometimes you have to break the rules and Wednesday night in Boston is one of those instances against a road-weary Washington club.
